3 editions: English, Spanish, Catalan
Book design by Susan Marsh The Challenge The Catalan and Spanish translations contain considerably more words than English for the same information. We needed to create page layouts that could accommodate different amounts of text for the three languages without moving any of the art. This meant the printer could print all three editions with only a black plate change for each. The Solution Working closely with designer Susan Marsh, we set up production templates based on her design prototype, and established separate column depths for each language. Composing the Spanish and Catalan required sensitivity to the different hyphenation rules and special characters used in each language. The project included several rounds of edits based on marked-up PDFs from editors and translators. At each stage, it was critical to maintain the same relationship between the text and the art across all three editions.
